The Mary Mac Show | Pet Loss | Missing Joshua

The Mary Mac Show Podcast

This week in Episode 32, I share my story about my love for my parents’ dog, Joshua, who got me through an extremely difficult time in my life.

After flying off the back of a motorcycle when a car cut in front of us, I survived a near fatal accident which left me badly broken in several parts of my body with the need for three surgeries, months of hospitalization and rehab, followed by another year of out-patient physical therapy.

Our beloved Joshua

Joshua became my constant companion, always next to me along this long journey.

In this week’s podcast, I share about his final days when he left us in March of this year.

I’m still missing him.

There are times when I’ll just be going about my day, and thoughts of him come to me. And, of course, I cry.

Sometimes in a painful jag. Other times I just feel the tears come and they run down my cheek until they relax.

I can never tell which will come and at what time and what triggers it, really.

But I just know, I go with it because there is nothing that will stop it.

He was an amazing dog. And I’m so grateful I had the privilege of being a part of his life!

The Mary Mac Show | Our Loved One’s Belongings

The Mary Mac Show Podcast

This week in Episode 31, we discuss how the bereaved struggle with when or if to release their loved one’s belongings, and how to best deal with this difficult process.

The most important thing to know is NOT to touch, launder, move anything from where it was when the person died. That task is left only to the person closest to the one who died and only they will decided what to do with their loved one’s possessions.

This is something that will take a long time, often many years, and even then they may choose to keep them as is.

Each of us is different and we need to honor their decisions.

The Mary Mac Show | Unnecessary Deaths

The Mary Mac Show Podcast

This week in Episode 30, we discuss the irresponsible acts that individuals take that lead to their own deaths or the deaths of others and how we are left to cope with their recklessness.

When someone in our family or a friend commits a reckless act, it can lead to tragedy.

Whether that act causes others’ deaths or their own, it leaves the surviving families distraught, overwhelmed with feelings of remorse, regret, bitterness, guilt, and many other emotions.

The Mary Mac Show | Father’s Day | Sweet and Bittersweet

The Mary Mac Show Podcast

In Episode 29, we remember our father and father figures who made an impact on our lives. We also discuss the pain of bereaved fathers, and father’s whose wives are struggling to bear children and fear they will never be called “Dad.”

The pain from a father’s death is often severe especially if we had a wonderful relationship with our Dads.

But, sometimes, our relationship wasn’t as we would expect and we struggle with the ‘what if’s’ and perhaps guilt that may bring.

Yet whatever the relationship, good or bad, that we had with him, we must forgive ourselves and even moreso him for what you needed that you didn’t get, for what you and he said to each other that stung, and all the unfinished business that might still linger that neither of you can do anything about anymore.

We also recognize all the father figures who raised you and cared for you if your Dad died younger than expected.

And we also talk about bereaved fathers who have buried their child, children or even all their children.

Lastly, we look at men who struggle to have children with their wives, those who experience a miscarriage or stillborn child, as well as those who deal with infertility and/or the knowledge that they may never have children of their own. We also remember men who are older now and wished they had children years ago when it was more practical, or those who never found the right women to raise a family.

This can be a very melancholy day for some. Let us acknowledge them all.

The Mary Mac Show | How to Help a Grieving Friend or Relative | Practical Support

The Mary Mac Show Podcast

Previously, in episodes 14 and 15, we learned what to SAY and NOT SAY to a grieving friend or relative.

In Episode 27, we discussed what to DO to lend support, emotional support, to those we love who are grieving the death of a loved one.

This week in Episode 28, we discuss that to DO to lend practical support, everything from being present when the person first dies, helping with funeral arrangements, writing obituaries, eulogies, making sure everyone is fed, running errands, ironing clothing for the wake and funeral and so much more.

When a loved one dies, we become overwhelmed with all the tasks that need attending to and there is nothing more comforting to know good friends are near and waiting for the bereaved’s gentle commands.

There is nothing more wonderful to know that your friend is not in this alone and you are there right by their side.
