The Mary Mac Show | How to Help a Grieving Friend or Relative | Practical Support

The Mary Mac Show Podcast

Previously, in episodes 14 and 15, we learned what to SAY and NOT SAY to a grieving friend or relative.

In Episode 27, we discussed what to DO to lend support, emotional support, to those we love who are grieving the death of a loved one.

This week in Episode 28, we discuss that to DO to lend practical support, everything from being present when the person first dies, helping with funeral arrangements, writing obituaries, eulogies, making sure everyone is fed, running errands, ironing clothing for the wake and funeral and so much more.

When a loved one dies, we become overwhelmed with all the tasks that need attending to and there is nothing more comforting to know good friends are near and waiting for the bereaved’s gentle commands.

There is nothing more wonderful to know that your friend is not in this alone and you are there right by their side.

Is that you?

Well in today’s episode, I talk about how to help someone who really needs you.

The Mary Mac Show Podcast

This week we commemorate our military men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country – they have died to keep our citizens free and safe.

In other parts of the world, each country honors their military, perhaps not at this exact time, but nonetheless, losing a loved one who has served in your country’s military is a difficult loss.

Some military, in various countries, cannot be trusted and this makes it even more difficult.

In Episode 25, we discuss our pain after someone we love, who was serving in the military, is killed in action and how our lives are suddenly turned upside down.

Below are various links that can put you in touch with other families who are also grieving a military death. Even if you are not in the USA, please do reach out to TAPS International which can connect you to someone who knows exactly what you are going through. And, if you have listened in to my podcast regularly, you know that it’s the relationship and not the label that’s important!

The Mary Mac Show | Permission To Move Forward

The Mary Mac Show Podcast

In Episode 24, we look at giving ourselves permission to grieve and, simultaneously, consider what we can do which will bring us joy again. Each day, in a small way, we are rebuilding a new life, even if we don’t want to.

At some point, when the shock has subsided and you begin to realize that this is your new life, you take a long hard look in the mirror and decide you will become a victim or a victor.

Each one of us has that choice.

And while it’s definitely not an easy choice, it’s one that needs to be made.

Because there is no doubt you will miss your loved one terribly, but at the same time, you don’t have to give up your life because they are no longer here.

Now, you might wish that you could trade places, but that’s not possible.

And you might wish you didn’t have to go through this because you still can’t believe they’ve died or were killed.

But whether we like it or not, each day we wake up we are slowly making a new life for ourselves with the decisions we make all day long.

In this episode, we discuss that new road you are carving out for yourself.

Like it or not.
